The International Baccalaureate Program

St. Clement Elementary Junior High School is a fully authorized International Baccalaureate World School, offering the IB Primary and Middle Years Programs to students in South Edmonton. The Primary Years Program is designed for students aged 3 - 12. The Middle Years Program is designed for students aged 11 - 16. The IB Diploma Program, for students aged 16 - 19,  is offered at our partner school, Holy Trinity High School. There are no prerequisites for entry into any of the IB programmes. It is not necessary, for example, for students to complete the Primary Years Program before beginning the Middle Years Program. There are common elements in the three programmes, however, and each one flows naturally into the next. Each of the IB programmes promotes the education of the whole person by emphasizing the student's intellectual, personal, social and emotional health. In keeping with their reputation for academic excellence and innovative teaching strategies, the IB programmes also emphasize knowledge and studies in the major traditions of learning - languages, humanities, sciences, mathematics and the arts.

The mission of the International Baccalaureate is:

... to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

The IB mission is given meaning for students largely through the IB Learner Profile Adobe Reader Required, which is the IB mission translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st century. The Learner Profile is common to all three IB programs. In keeping with the IB emphasis on intercultural understanding, St. Clement has translated the Learner Profiles into the three most common languages, other than English, spoken by our students and parents:

The IB maintains strict standards in terms of how its programs are delivered in schools around the world. Each IB World School has a responsibility to meet IB standards in terms of delivering the programs as well as to annually publish the IB General Regulations and Rules and to make them available to parents:

St. Clement staff and students have recently completed a year-long self-study regarding our delivery of the IB programmes in 2006 and came through a 2007 evaluation visit from IB with flying colours. We will begin our next self-study in the 2011 school year.
